Enrique Arce, best known internationally as the beleaguered Arturo Román in Netflix megahit “Money Heist,” is set to star opposite Helena Caldeira in “Aguas Pasadas” (“Past Waters”), an eight-episode psychological thriller drama marking a significant new Iberian co-production.
Caldeira, who broke out in Netflix’s Portuguese-language hit “Rabo de Peixe” and period drama “Blood’less’ Revolution,” will co-lead the series, which blends psychological tension with emotional drama.
Directed by Bruno Gascon, whose credits include the well-received feature “Shadow” and series “Irreversível,” this series is written by João Tordo, María Mínguez and Gascon, and is based on author Tordo’s book trilogy. Production is handled by Joana Domingues at Portugal’s Caracol Studios and Paloma Mora at Spain’s TV ON Producciones.
The project has built momentum having been presented at Conecta Fiction & Entertainment, Serielizados Fest and Iberseries & Platino Industria. It has most recently been selected for the 7th Episodio 0: Series in Development section at Mexico’s Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara, one of Latin America’s key industry gatherings.
Filming is scheduled to run from March through the end of June across locations in the Greater Lisbon region and Alcácer do Sal in Portugal, as well as Valencia, Spain. The series is backed by Portuguese public broadcaster RTP, PIC Portugal and the Valencian Institute of Culture, consolidating an ambitious Portugal-Spain co-production with strong international appeal.
The series adds to a growing wave of Iberian co-productions leveraging talent and locations from both countries, a trend that has accelerated as Spanish and Portuguese producers increasingly look to pool resources and expand their reach globally.
