Billy Crystal remembered his longtime friend Rob Reiner on Oscar night, three months after Reiner’s death, alongside his wife Michelle Singer.
The tribute served as the kickoff for the heartfelt In Memoriam portion of the evening’s celebration, where the industry honors those who died in the last year. Crystal spoke about a slew of Reiner’s biggest hits, including This is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, Misery, The American President, The Sure Thing and When Harry Met Sally.
“My friend Rob’s movies will last for lifetimes because they were about what makes us laugh, and cry, and what we aspire to be: far better in his eyes, far kinder, far funnier and far more human,” shared Crystal, before he honored Singer, a photographer, producer and social justice warrior whose life was also cut short.
Crystal recognized the Reiners for their work beyond Hollywood, like supporting equal marriage rights across the United States and fighting social injustice “in a country they both loved,” the actor and comedian touted.
“To the millions who have enjoyed his films all these years, I want you to know here and around the world, how many times Rob told me that it meant everything to him, that his work meant something to you. And for us, who had the privilege of working with and knowing him and loving him, all we can say is, ‘Buddy, what fun we had storming the castle,” Crystal added.
