Yet again, Connor McDavid has struggled to win the ultimate prize. Team Canada had control of nearly every shift in the game but it was just not fate when everything went down the wire. Despite the heartbreaking loss at the Olympics, a lot of people still rallied behind him. No one believed in the Edmonton Oilers star more than Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

Canada rallied behind the Oilers star
Big moments like the Olympics gold medal match call for big players. McDavid was precisely who the bright lights were calling for at Milano Cortina. He managed to lead Team Canada against tough defenses like the USA and Finland. It was just not their day.
Crosby noted how much everyone on Coach Jon Cooper’s roster wanted to win because of the inspiration imparted by the Oilers star, via Bill Price of NHL.com.
“He did everything humanly possible to lead us. To come into a tournament like this, the best players in the world, and to be able to elevate to the level that he was at is unheard of. It’s something that’s amazing to see up close and you feel for him just because he did so much and led in every possible way. We all want to win for each other but you know, especially for him. It’s tough that we weren’t able to get that result,” the Team Canada and Penguins legend declared.

McDavid was insane throughout this whole Olympics. He notched two goals while also running Coach Cooper’s offense effectively through his 11 assists. Everyone at home and Milan saw how dominant of a player he was in their pursuit of a gold medal. It was also why he got crowned the Most Valuable Player at the Olympics despite only finishing with the silver medal.
Surely, Crosby’s belief in McDavid will be paid off in the coming years. Whether it’s finally hoisting the Stanley Cup for the Oilers or coming back for revenge in 2030, hockey fans should learn from the Penguins legend and not count him out.
