President Donald Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit Thursday against the Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Department — with the potential for U.S. taxpayers to pay for it.
In a federal lawsuit filed in Florida, Trump, along with his sons Don Jr. and Eric and their family business, the Trump Organization, claimed the agencies were liable for not protecting tax records from being leaked by former IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn in 2019. The New York Times published an in-depth report on Trump’s tax returns based on the leak in 2020. Littlejohn later pleaded guilty to stealing the tax data and leaking it to the press.
