The North Carolina Tar Heels will open up their 2026 NCAA Tournament run on Thursday night, playing No. 11 VCU in Greenville. UNC earned the No. 6 seed in the South Region and a first round date with the Rams.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams all time and for North Carolina, they are looking to get out of the first round after losing to Ole Miss there last season. The Tar Heels are entering this game on a two-game losing streak after falling to Duke in the regular season finale and then Clemson in the ACC Tournament.

Their opponent, VCU, won the Atlantic 10 Tournament to earn the automatic bid. They are a deep team that can play up to 10 players and their leading scorer comes off the bench for them. They are also one of the top three-point shooting teams in the country. So it will be interesting to see how UNC can defend that.
